Through the DAAT are expected to report to the Community Safety Committee with recommendations on further measures the Council may be able to take to assist in tackling the problem of solvent abuse in Fife.

Great Sympathy

Councillor Christine May added: ''We have great sympathy with the family over the death of their son and are keen to throw our weight behind a campaign that will raise awareness of the issues and dangers surrounding solvent abuse.

Must Continue

''We must continue to build on the work of the DAAT and together educate retailers to prevent the illegal sale of solvents to underage young people, to further educate

young people in schools and in communities by providing them with accurate and appropriate information.

''We will also watch with interest plans announced recently for a national research project to test how rigorously retailers apply the law in the sale of substances which can be abused by young people.''

Rita Keyte Coordinator of the Fife's DAAT

Concluded :''We welcome the backing the council has given both this case and to the partnership work through the DAAT. The experiences of the O'Brien's should serve as a stark reminder to us all of the devastating impact solvent abuse can have. We hope that the creation of the Lee O'Brien Solvent Trust will receive support across the board in a bid to minimise the numbers of people who go through similar circumstances.''

FIFE COUNCIL BACK CAMPAIGN TO COMBAT SOLVENT ABUSE

FIFE Council have agreed to back a campaign to combat the serious threat posed by solvent abuse following the tragic deaths earlier this year of two young people in Fife.

The Lee O’Brien Solvent Trust

Was formed in March, 2002 and targets the problem of solvent abuse. The Fife Drug and Alcohol Action Team is addressing issues of volatile solvent abuse at local level and is supportive of the aims of the trust which include strengthening current legal restrictions on the sale of volatile solvents including, in particular, cigarette lighter fuel to young persons.

Council Leader Christine May calls upon the Scottish Executive

At Thursday’s Full Council meeting it was agreed to support the aims of the Lee O’Brien Solvent Trust and call upon the Scottish Executive to investigate and pilot new preventative measures to reduce under-age sale of potentially abusive products.

She also highlighted the positive work currently being undertaken by the Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) and the need to further raise awareness in primary and secondary schools in Fife of the problems of solvent abuse.
