'Out and About'
Stirling Castle 'Stirling Castle' stands at the top of a hill overlooking the countryside and the River Forth. In times gone by the castle was a favourite residence for Stuart Monarchs. It is still of great importance to the Scottish Nation. The first evidence of a castle being on this spot dates back to the 11th century and visitors can enjoy historical displays, 16th century kitckens, guided tours and the wonderful Regimental Museum of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. It is open to the public all year round.
Mar's Wark 'Mar's Wark' can be found at the head of the old town and is infact the shell of an old house buiilt around 1569 by the Earl of Mar, Keeper of Stirling Castle who was once Regent of Scotland during James 6th reign. The house was converted into barracks after the Jacobite Rebellion, cannon fire further damaged it during the 1745-6 up-rising.
Old Bridge Stirling 'Stirling Old Bridge' built in the 15th century was for almost four centuries the lowest bridge over the River Forth until Stirling New Bridge opened in 1831. The Old Bridge which can be seen today followed on from previous structures found nearby including an old wooden one which centred in Sir William Wallace's fantastic victory over the English at the battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.
Cambuskenneth Abbey 'Cambuskenneth Abbey' was closely involved with the Battle of Bannockburn (1314), James 3rd and his Queen are burried in the grounds. It was also the place of Bruce's Parliament in 1326 which was the first to include representatives of Scotland's burghs. Most of the building was removed after the Reformation but the Bell Tower or Camponile still survives.
Old Town Jail The 'Old Town Jail' was built in victorian times to replace the 'Tolbooth Prison'. Solitary confinement was the order of the day along with hard labour. The authorities also wanted to improve moral attitudes of the prisoners and enforced religion on them. A viewing platform gives wonderful views over the town.
Argyll's Lodgings

'Argylls' Lodging' was built about 1630 by the first Earl of Stirling. It has been restored and decorated to its' original decor which would have been found in its heyday.
