The easiest way to visit these areas is by car but there is a very good bus service for this purpose. Broughty Ferry a seaside suburb of Dundee can be found four miles to the east of Dundee city centre. Known as "the jewel in Dundee's crown", its fine seafront esplanade and sweeping sands provide the perfect place for a relaxing stroll or a quiet picnic. Once regarded as the "richest square mile in Europe" because it was home to the wealthy jute barons who built Dundee's textile fortunes- it can trace its origins back to the 15th century fisher folk who built their homes around the harbour close to Broughty Ferry Castle. Her you will also find individual boutiques and art galleries, fine eateries, pavement cafés, stylish bars, coffee shops and all the essential stores and services you could wish for.

The town of Carnoustie was founded in the late 18th century, and quickly grew throughout the 19th century due to the expansion of the local textile industry. Due to its' seaside location it has been a popular tourist resort from the early Victorian era up to the latter half of the 20th century. It is best known for its associations with golf. Carnoustie can be considered a dormitory town for its closest city, Dundee, which is 11 miles (18 km) to the west.

Arbroath is another popular east coast holiday resort with fine sandy beaches, spectacular red sandstone cliffs and caves along the coast line. There are more excellent golf courses both in and around the town, together with a Nature Trail. To the south east lies the Bell Rock lighthouse and the Signal Tower (built in 1813), both designed by Robert Stevenson. The Tower now houses the town's museum. Arbroath has long been a fishing centre and is particularly associated with kippers and Abroath Smokies (smoked haddock). As you might expect, the restaurateurs in the area make full use of this fresh local produce.

People have settled at Monifieth from the early days of man, and many sites of archaeological interest and relics are witness to this today. The people of Monifieth played their part in the whale and sea industry which thrived in the eighteenth and mid-nineteenth century. A residential town in Angus situated to the east of Dundee on the Firth of Tay, Monifieth owes much of its modern development to the prosperity of Dundee. The parish church built in 1812, is said to have been built on the site of an earlier chapel that was the final resting place of St Andrew. The Art Deco War Memorial built in 1922 is surrounded by an impressive annual floral display. Monifieth is noted as a golfing centre, its links course being used as a starting point for those wanting to play in the British Open.
