Common Riding

July 2006 onwards, Common Riding Festivals. Langholm July tbc, Lauder 5th Aug 2006 Scottish Borders. These celebrations represent the ancient practice of marking a town's boundaries and continue today as distinctive and colourful expressions of civic pride and tradition. Youth Festival Aberdeen
2nd to 12th August 2006, Aberdeen International Youth Festival, Aberdeen. A celebration of the best youth talent from all parts of the world, this event brings Aberdeen to life offering 10 days of dazzling entertainment, music, theatre and dance, starting off with a colourful grand parade through the city centre. Events will be taking place throughout the northeast. From orchestral concerts to steel drums, song recitals, massed choirs, traditional music, ballet, African dance and drumming, opera and special events for children. Military Tattoo

4th to 26th August 2006,Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Edinburgh. Scotland's stunning annual outdoor military spectacular with its' magnificent backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. The Tattoo has been referred to as the most spectacular show in the world and is watched by an international TV audience of 100 million every year. There is no substitute for being there, as part of the 217,000-strong audience over its three-week season on the Esplanade at Edinburgh Castle. Tartan Day Aberdeen
5th August 2006, Tartan Day, Aberdeen. This event gives visitors to the city and local inhabitants an opportunity to participate in a wide range of free activities including walking tours, music events and art exhibitions focussing on traditional local and Scottish culture and heritage. Edinburgh International Festival
13th August to 3rd September 2006, Edinburgh International Festival, Edinburgh. One of the greatest celebrations of the arts, the Edinburgh International Festival offers a unique opportunity to experience the excitement of live performance by internationally renowned artists as well as the joy of discovering new and unfamiliar works. A rich programme of classical music, theatre, opera and dance is staged in major theatres and concert halls and smaller venues around the city over a three-week period in late summer. www.eif.co.uk will give you further details.
Marymass Festival
17th to 28th August 2006, Marymass Festival, Irvine, Ayrshire. This is one of the biggest community events of its kind in Scotland, it offers a wealth of special events and activities, which includes 'The Pageantry of the Marymass Parade' with its origins in medieval times. Horses from the local carters pull the parade floats. The torchlit procession, the folk festival, sports events, music festival and horse racing are among the items of entertainment. Scottish Parliament
23rd to 26th August 2006, Festival of Politics, Edinburgh. Last year's event proved to be a huge success when members of the public took part in dicussions etc with people in politics, media and the arts in a range of stimulating events that explore how politics touches all our lives. Loch Rannoch

August 2006 and throughout the Summer, Loch Rannoch Watersports Centre, Kinloch Rannoch. A multitude of activities are available to groups and individuals. Taster sessions for beginners are available all week, while those with more experience can benefit from further training or simply hire one of their boats. Sheep dog trials
14th to 16th September 2006, The ISDS Centenary International Sheep Dog Trials near Kelso. The International Sheep Dog Society was formed in 1906 in Haddington and returns to its place of origin for the 2006 Centenary International Trials. These will be held on the Charterhall Estates, near Kelso. The local committee is already planning something special and it promises to be an event to remember. Creetown Folk Festival

Stone skimming
24 September 2006, The World Stone Skimming Championships 2006, Easdale Island, Argyll, Scotland. This is an annual event. People of all ages and any level of skill can enter. Competitors are allowed 5 skims using specially selected Easdale slate skimming stones. To qualify, the stone must bounce at least three times - it is then judged on the distance achieved before it sinks. 22nd September to 1st October 2006, Wigtown Book Festival, Wigtown, Dumfries and Galloway. Hamish
29th September to 8th October 2006, Darvel Music Festival, Darvel, Ayrshire. This Music Festival is one of cultural highlights of the South West of Scotland, with over thirty acts offering a truly eclectic mix of styles. Argyllshire

6th to 15th October 2006, Cowalfest 2006, Dunoon and Cowal, Argyllshire. The largest walking festival in Scotland has also become a major arts festival with a 10 day long programme of walks, arts, cultural and social events that celebrate landscape and the natural world's influence on creativity. The Cowal Peninsula hosts this event every autumn and the West Highland destination is readily accessible by plane, train, car and ferry from the rest of the UK and Europe.
