The Dorothy Dunnett Reader's Association 'World Famous Scottish Novelist to be Honoured' | ![]()
| ACCLAIMED novelist Dorothy Dunnett is to be honoured in a stone laying ceremony in Edinburgh on Saturday April 22nd 2006. Lady Dunnett will become the latest distinguished Scottish author to be commemorated with an inscribed flagstone in Makar’s’ Court, next to the city’s Writers Museum. The ceremony has attracted international attention from the author’s large readership with guests expected from America, Canada and Europe, as well as a number of VIPs from both sides of the border. The author’s grandchildren, Bella and Hal Dunnett, aged 10 and 11, will unveil the stone. Dorothy Dunnett, who died in 2001, was described as ‘the greatest living writer of historical fiction’ (Washington Post) and ‘the best in the genre since Walter Scott’ (The Times). Last year her book ‘Game of Kings’ came second in the Orange sponsored contest to find the ‘Best Scottish Book of all Time’. Regarded as a historical novelist of unparalleled brilliance by her admirers, she has inspired a flourishing readership with a quarterly magazine, regular gatherings and dozens of internet chat sites. |

She was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Library of Scotland, a trustee of the Scottish National War Memorial, a non-executive director of Scottish Television, and a director of the Edinburgh Book Festival. Dorothy was a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and was awarded the OBE in 1992 for her services to literature. She was married to the distinguished newspaper editor and journalist, Sir Alastair Dunnett. She died, aged 78, in November 2001 after a short illness. Dorothy Dunnett’s stone will bear her name, coat of arms and a short quotation from her novel ‘Checkmate’ – the last of the acclaimed Lymond Chronicles: “Where are the links of the chain…joining us to the past?” It will lie beside those commemorating Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, and others, in Scotland’s evolving national literary monument. | ![]()
