In Scotland, as in any other country, traditions
walk hand in hand with History, however, will all this change
from 2005? The proposed merger of six of the Scottish Regiments
to make one large organisation is causing turmoil and frustration
within the communities all over Scotland.
The Scots are well known for their
Clans, large families of McDonalds, Campbells, MacKenzies etc
etc to name but a few. Clan membership is proudly enjoyed by its
members scattered all over the world. Scottish Regiments can be
compared in the same ilk, they are made up of men, women and their
families who become a community in their own right. They share
the ups and downs of military life and support each other in times
of sadness. Each Regiment becomes its own family clan. Along with
this comes the history, gathered over numerous years since the
regiment's inception, the war victories, won when protecting the
realm, the help given to other countries in time of need. The
loss felt when heros fall in battle. This is something that cannot
be taken away from those involved.
So why the need to disband and
regroup? Has the war in Iraq cost Britain more than it can afford
in money terms? Was the war in Iraq really something Britain should
have got involved with? So many questions with a multitude of
answers.
"On 10th November 2004 The
Scotsman newspaper reported that the Prime Minister ordered the
Ministry of Defence to 'save the regiments'. Geoff Hoon, Secretary
of State for Defence, following the recommendations of General
Sir Mike Jackson, the Chief of the General Staff, believes that
restructuring is vital to create a more flexible army."
The Black Watch, served by Fathers,
Sons, Brothers, Cousins, Uncles and Grandfathers is one of the
regiments under threat.
At the end of the day who is running
the country? General Jackson or the British Government?
