'Cambo House'

Recently while out walking in the beautiful countryside in the St Andrews area of North Fife I stumbled on a property by the name of 'Cambo House'. The house is currently occupied by Peter and Catherine Erskine. Catherine, who is a keen gardener, has been the inspiration behind the existence of the present gardens, which were first opened to the public in the early 90s. She also has a flourishing mail order 'snowdrop' business.

Peter’s parents, Sir David, 5th baronet of Cambo, and Lady Erskine, still live on the estate in a farmhouse. They can often be spotted visiting the house and gardens.

The house is set in magnificent grounds which are a treat to explore. But the main interest I have taken in Cambo House is the opportunity for visitors to take short breaks actually living in one of the many individual apartments on offer in the main building. In the main house there are different styles of accomodation on offer from bed and breakfast to self catering. Holiday Chalets are also available within the grounds. There is something here for everyone from a single traveller to a group of people, a romantic weekend, family holiday, golfing party, wedding party or a get-together in Scotland.

For the discerning gardener, during the summer months, there are opportunities to work in the gardens and live on the estate. An alternative is to take a tour of the gardens which is conducted by the head gardener and dine in the main house afterwards.

There is a uniqueness about Cambo, which has been home to the Erskine Family since 1688, this uniqueness encourages guests to return year after year. The magnificent Victorian mansion house was built in 1881 and lies at the heart of a 1200 acre estate in one of the most unspoiled areas of Scotland.

Many of Scotland's historical properties are expensive to maintain and their owners are trying to find ways of covering the cost. The Erskine Family have found a new way of allowing members of the public an experience not otherwise on offer and at the same time maintain the dignity and granduer of their home. More details on the accommodation availability and dates of events can be obtained by visiting www.camboestate.com
