'Tombstone City or Dalgety Bay'

The Bay Inn

Dalgety Bay which lies to the east of the Forth Bridges on the Aberdour, Kirkcaldy Road, was once a lively vibrant residential area. Full of lovely houses of all shapes and sizes with something to suit everyone's price range and way of living. Two schools serve the community along with the Bay Inn, a Library, Medical Centre, Church, Community Centre, Sports and Leisure Centre and Police Station. The sailing club is a favourite place for local yachtsmen. A Bowling Green was added recently with a small all day supermarket on hand for local residents. Situated at the north end of the Dalgety Bay are some small shops and dentist surgery, optician and the much needed take--away. Something sinister is happening in the heart of the town, shops based in the popular shopping centre are closing.

The Travel Agent has gone, the much loved and frequently used Chinese Restaurant has gone and now the local coffee shop, for years a much wanted facility. But why now? Well, Tesco moved into the area some years ago having bought out Wm Low Supermarkets, now Tesco own the land the shopping centre is built on plus the car parking area. It has become a talking point around the area, the shop owners cannot compete with the larger conglomerates and rent increases are forcing closure of small businesses. Does this mean the newsagent, dry cleaners, chemist and building society will be next? Let us hope not, after all a village, town or city needs a heart and a variety of shops and services to provide the community with exactly what is required to sustain a happy environment.
