'A Bridge Too Far'

Forth Road Bridge

Forth Rail Bridge

Golden Gate Bridge

The Forth Road Bridge which spans the river Forth from South Queensferry to North Queensferry is dominating the news at the moment due to the controversy regarding whether it should be repaired or replaced by another construction. The skyline from North Queensferry over the River Forth is remembered by residents and tourists alike due to the two wonderful structures aiding travellers to cross from one side to the other by train on the Rail Bridge or by car, bus, cycle or on foot by the Road Bridge. The Road Bridge was first opened to traffic in 1964.

The toll bridge replaced a centuries-old ferry service to carry cars, cyclists, and pedestrians across the Forth.

In San Fransisco we have another Suspension Bridge, this was opened in May 1937 and was designed by Joseph Strauss and Charles Ellis. It is still standing to this day.

Issues regarding the continued tolling of the Forth Road Bridge, and those over its deteriorating condition along with proposals to have it replaced or supplemented by an additional crossing, have caused it to become something of a political football for the Scottish Parliament.

If the crossing on the road bridge is becoming too busy then the local authorities on both sides should look at an alternative method of transport. The one that appears to work and has already been tried and tested is the use of ferries. So why, I ask, is this necessary facility missing?
